Why High Performers Are Turning to Nervous System Regulation.

There is a quiet shift happening in the world of mental health, one that most people don’t notice until they experience it firsthand. For years, the dominant approach to improving mental health centered around thoughts: changing them, reframing them, challenging them. And while that work still matters, it is no longer the full picture. The conversation among clinicians, researchers, and high-level practitioners has evolved. The focus is no longer just on what you think, but on the nervous system beneath it.


In my work, I’ve seen this distinction change everything. Because the reality is simple, and often overlooked: you cannot consistently think clearly if your body is operating in a state of stress.


This idea is not new, but it has gained renewed attention through the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, whose Polyvagal Theory has become foundational in modern trauma-informed care. Porges’ research reframed how we understand the autonomic nervous system, emphasizing that our physiological state, often outside of conscious awareness directly shapes how we perceive the world, how we relate to others, and how we think. His work has been expanded and translated into practical application by clinicians like Deb Dana, and popularized in broader culture through voices such as Dr. Andrew Huberman, whose work at Stanford has brought neuroscience into everyday conversation.


At its core, nervous system regulation is about how your body responds to stress, pressure, and stimulation. It determines whether you remain composed or become reactive, whether you recover quickly or stay stuck, whether your thinking sharpens or fragments under pressure.


For individuals building careers, leading teams, or creating something of their own, this becomes especially relevant. High performers are often told to push harder, stay disciplined, and outwork the competition. But what is rarely addressed is the internal cost of operating in a constant state of activation. Over time, this state, what we would clinically refer to as sympathetic dominance begins to erode clarity. Decision-making becomes slower or more impulsive. Emotional responses become less controlled. Recovery becomes inconsistent.

From the outside, it can look like burnout. Internally, it is often dysregulation.

This is where the traditional advice to “just think differently” falls short. Cognitive strategies, including those used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), are highly effective—but only when the nervous system is in a state that allows access to those higher-level processes. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the Score, the thinking brain does not operate independently of the body. When the nervous system perceives threat, it shifts resources away from rational processing and toward survival. In those moments, logic is not the priority, protection is.


What this means, practically, is that many people are trying to solve a physiological problem with purely psychological tools.


The shift toward nervous system regulation is not about abandoning thought work. It is about sequencing it correctly. Regulation first, then cognition.


When the system is regulated, clarity follows. When the system is dysregulated, even the most well-practiced mindset strategies can fail.


This is why we are seeing a broader integration of body-based practices into mental health care. Breathwork, for example, has been extensively studied for its ability to influence the autonomic nervous system. Controlled breathing techniques can directly impact vagal tone, improving the body’s ability to return to a state of calm after stress. Huberman has spoken at length about physiological sighs and their immediate effect on reducing acute stress responses. Similarly, movement, whether through strength training, walking, or practices like yoga plays a critical role in regulating the nervous system by helping the body complete stress cycles.


Even seemingly simple factors such as sleep, light exposure, and environmental stimulation have measurable effects on how the nervous system functions. The modern environment, with its constant input and demand for attention, often keeps individuals in a low-grade state of activation without them realizing it. Over time, that becomes their baseline.

And when that becomes your baseline, clarity feels inconsistent.


The individuals I see who make the most meaningful progress are not necessarily those who are the most disciplined in the traditional sense. They are the ones who begin to understand and work with their internal state. They recognize when they are operating from pressure rather than precision. They learn to create conditions that support clarity rather than constantly fighting against dysregulation.


This is where mental health, at a higher level, begins to look different.

It is no longer just about reducing anxiety or managing symptoms. It becomes about increasing capacity. The capacity to remain composed in high-stakes situations. The capacity to recover quickly. The capacity to think clearly when it matters most.

In many ways, this is what separates those who sustain high performance from those who burn out trying to reach it.


The conversation around nervous system regulation is still evolving, but its direction is clear. Mental health is becoming more integrated, more physiological, and more precise. It is moving away from fragmented approaches and toward a more complete understanding of how humans actually operate.


And for those building what’s next, for those stepping into greater responsibility, greater pressure, and greater opportunity. This shift is not just relevant. It is essential.

Because at a certain level, success is no longer determined by how hard you can push.

It is determined by how well you can operate.
